It was the first year for the West Elmore Lions Club to host the Duck Race along a portion of Mill Creek, but the event was an overwhelming success.

The club had planned on selling just 100 ducks. That amount was almost tripled, and the top three winners brought home a nice payout. The remainder of the money, $1,200, will be used by the club for various service projects such as Lions Sight.

At the end of the race, first place was $600, Second $400 and Third $200.

The race was held prior to the last Tunes on the Green for the season at Village Green Park in Millbrook. It was a stifling, hot day, so volunteers had no problem jumping into the creek to rescue ducks which made it past the net barrier.

Aside from club members, Scott Davis and the Parks and Recreation Department had a big hand in setting up the course and chasing after wayward ducks. Parks and Rec also put barriers along the short course to keep the ducks from getting trapped along the way. The race was from one pedestrian bridge to the other.

The club plans to do the race again in the future, and it is expected a lot more ducks will be floating down Mill Creek.

The club welcomes new members! You can follow them on Facebook or visit their website at www.westelmorelions.org

You can reach the club at their email which is westelmorelions@gmail.com.

“The Duck Race was definitely a success and went beyond our expectations,” said John Collier.
