Every Day the work of First Responders matters…It just isn’t always Breaking News

BY SARAH STEPHENS

ELMORE/AUTAUGA NEWS

It is only 1 p.m. on this Friday, and already first responders have been busy in our area doing great things you will probably not read about in most media outlets.

Why is that? Because it is the kind of stuff that happens every single day.

Early this morning the police scanner here in my office was really busy. Prattville Police and Elmore County law enforcement was trying to track down a man with dementia, who had become lost. They were using all of the forms of technology available, and before long he was found very safe and unharmed.

Just a while ago, the Millbrook Police Department was called to a local business for a missing child. But very quickly, the child was located safe, and had been hiding. (Kids will do that.)

So, it isn’t breaking news because it all ended well. That is how it works most of the time, fortunately. But this is what our first responders do, day in and day out, and not all of it will make the news. We just take it for granted.

So, I felt like we may need a reminder. Every day our EMS, firefighters, and officers respond to calls that will not make the news. Our officers help change flat tires, or push vehicles out of the roadway that have run out of gas. Firefighters respond to calls that turn out to be unreported controlled burns. EMS workers respond to difficulty breathing calls. They all respond to generic calls that are not necessarily “exciting” but they make a huge difference to the person who called for help.

Before this day is over, it is quite possible there will be some “breaking news” in our area. Things can change in seconds when it comes to what our first responders deal with daily. But for now, I just want to say THANK YOU for what they do…day in and day out, without a lot of attention. Because, as some will tell you, “Well that is their job! I pay their salaries.”

Thank you. Please give them a Thank You as well when you have the opportunity.
