Elmore County NWTF Chapter to Host FREE Jakes Youth Event

From the Elmore County Chapter of National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF)

The Elmore County Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation is hosting a JAKES field day event full of outdoor activities June 11, 2022 at Ft. Toulouse in Wetumpka, Alabama. JAKES stands for Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship, which pushes the NWTF’s dedication to educating the next generation of smart, ethical hunters.

The field day will provide opportunities for youth to experience the outdoors through hands-on events, education and family fun. Each JAKES event focuses on conservation and outdoor recreation, with expert instructors teaching important lessons in wildlife management tied into a strong family-values theme. With an emphasis on fun, the events keep kids interested while learning.

Participants receive a free T-shirt, JAKES membership that includes a subscription to the JAKES Country magazine, with fun and educational articles focused on items of interest to young readers. Lunch at the event is provided for the participants.

“Many kids never get a chance to see how much fun the outdoors can be, so they spend their time playing video games or watching TV. But events like this show that, given the chance, they would love to be outside instead,” said Archie Burchard and Sanford Peeples.

When the National Wild Turkey Federation was founded in 1973, there were about 1.3 million wild turkeys in North America. After decades of work, that number hit a historic high of almost 7 million turkeys. To succeed, the NWTF stood behind science-based conservation and hunters’ rights.

Today, the NWTF is focused on the future of hunting and conservation through its Save the Habitat, Save the Hunt initiative – which mobilizes science, fundraising and devoted volunteers to conserve and enhance more than 4 million acres of essential wildlife habitat. They also recruit at least 1.5 million hunters and open access to 500,000 acres for hunting. For more information, visit www.nwtf.org
