Elmore County Schools: Supt. Dennis Talks Autism Awareness, Upcoming Ability Games

FROM RICHARD DENNIS

ELMORE COUNTY SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT

April is Autism Awareness Month and over the last twenty years the number of children identified with autism spectrum disorder increased to about 1 in 44 children (ASD) according to estimates from CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network.  These students attend school and are successful academically and can participate in all activities.  Some students need support and/or accommodations to fully engage in some activities so it important to acknowledge them and work to assist in ways to eliminate barriers.

Next Tuesday, April 19, Elmore County Public Schools Special Needs Department will host the Ability Games for the multi-handicapped students in our system.  The activity will be held at the Wetumpka Sports Complex starting a 10:00AM and concluding at 1:00PM.  We want to thank all those that have contributed to this program to support our students.

With just over a month of school to left I encourage all parents to check on their students’ progress.  Most state testing will conclude this next week and the teachers will begin to finish teaching new standards and start reviewing for final exams.  Please begin now to make sure your student is working to finish the semester strong.

We appreciate your support and have a Happy Easter!
