In March, Elmore County’s HIPPY group meeting was all about Dr. Seuss for Read Across America Night at Wetumpka Elementary School’s school cafeteria. Dinner was provided for the families that attended. Some fun activities included coloring sheets, face painting, and a special surprise guest, “The Cat in the Hat.” Wetumpka Elementary School also had their “Camp Learn Alot” reading night that the families could participate in. H.I.P.P.Y. is a FREE at home program and stands for Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters.
The families enjoyed dinner with some delicious sub sandwiches and chips. Coloring their “Cat in the Hat” hats and spending time with family was the highlight of the night. The Cat in the Hat enjoyed taking pictures with the children and she gave each child a Dr. Seuss book to take home with them, too. Once the meeting was over, the children went inside the school to attend different stations that were set up for the whole family to enjoy. HIPPY provided face painting for the students that attended the “Camp Learn Alot” and the Cat in the Hat visited with all.
The HIPPY coordinator for the program is Maryann Forelle McCluskey. She oversees the meetings, the home visitors working for her and helps the families of Elmore County preschoolers to prepare for kindergarten. McCluskey spoke to EAN and is no longer needing home visitor employees for the program but would like for any preschool age children in Elmore County to start enrolling for the upcoming new year.
HIPPY is now accepting enrollment for the 2022/2023 school year. Child must be 2,3,4, or 5 and live in or zoned for Elmore County Schools.
