More than 50 individuals, churches and community organizations participated Saturday in a Trunk or Treat Event designed for children and adults with special needs. The event was held in a parking lot across from the Field of Dreams at Daniel Pratt Elementary School.

This is the fifth year the Autauga County Children’s Policy Council has hosted the event for the community. Participants got creative with everything from life-size Operation and Candyland games to bringing farm animals and giant Legos.

Rusty Jacksland, an Autauga County Commissioner who was there with Riverside Church, said it was a great opportunity to not only be with the community but also serve the special needs community. Riverside Church has a ministry called Wonderfully Made that focuses on those with special needs.

Darrue Sharpe, Autauga County Extension Coordinator with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, said the event allowed her to give the community exposure to 4H while serving the special needs community.

Amy Kaplan-Zattler thanked the Council for putting on the event. “Everyone was so wonderful with our girls and my daughter finally got to go onto an actual school bus! (highlight of her year) and my other daughter saw a ‘real unicorn’ and danced to the police car music. Thank you everyone for doing this for our families.”

Students in Mrs. Johnson’s class at the Autauga County Technology helped with the event by packaging candy.

The Autauga County Children’s Policy Council works with legislative and school officials to positively change the lives of Autauga County’s children. Composed of over 60 organizations, and more than 100 members, the organization works to implement and support educational and health services into families’ lives.

In their efforts, Autauga County Children’s Policy Council has made significant impact in a multitude of areas including: Increased legislation for Erin’s Law, support groups for families with special needs, health checks, and acknowledging vital issues and solutions for children in Autauga County.
