(MONTGOMERY)—Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the conviction of John Jones, 24, for capital murder. Jones was convicted in Dallas County Circuit Court on November 7, 2019, for the murder of Alexis Hunter.
The evidence at trial showed that December 21, 2013, Alexis Hunter was walking on the track at Selma high school with two other teenage girls when three men approached them. Jones was one of those men and demanded that Hunter give him her cell phone. When she refused, Jones shot and killed her. The other men identified Jones to police as the man who shot and killed Alexis Hunter. Jones was subsequently charged with capital murder, and co–defendant Larry Hunter was convicted of murder for his participation in the killing.
Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson’s office successfully prosecuted this case and obtained a guilty verdict. Jones was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for his crime. Jones sought to have his conviction reversed on appeal.
The Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Division handled the case during the appeals process, arguing for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to affirm Jones’ conviction. The Court did so in a decision issued August 6.
Attorney General Marshall commended Assistant Attorney General Laura Irby Cuthbert for her successful work on this case, and thanked District Attorney Michael Jackson and his staff for their valuable assistance in defending the murder conviction.
