The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4572 in Wetumpka will host their Memorial Day Ceremony on May 31st at 11 a.m. at the Post located at 100 Otter Track Road. The event will feature a guest speaker and the regular appearance from Boy Scout Troop 51.

Before their service, an 8-foot granite monument will be revealed at the site, dedicated to fallen United States military members. The public is encouraged to attend the events Monday.

“We believed that it was a necessity to have a monument that dedicated itself to fallen soldiers who put their life on the line. Even though it resulted in the ultimate sacrifice, our fallen soldiers will never be forgotten,” said Post 4572 Commander Chris Guy.

The idea for the monument came from past Commander Vaughn Hines, who believes that this day is a long time coming.

“I brought the idea to our members several years ago, and it’s finally going to come to fruition. It was voted upon and unanimously passed. Through generous donations from the community, this dream is going to become a reality,” Hines said. “It was finished this past Tuesday, and once I saw it standing there it hit me all at once. I’m so proud, and I really think the community is going to be proud, too.”

VFW Post 4572 has approximately 500 members including the auxiliary. The organizations help to sponsor the Memorial and Veterans Day events, along with fundraisers for families in need, providing Thanksgiving dinner meals, and appearances in the Mardi Gras parade.

“We enjoy being involved in the community, and we anticipate to be even more involved moving forward,” Guy said.
