The school year may be over for most K-12 students and staff, but the work continues to make sure that the Summer Food Service Program continues offering healthy, nutritious meals to those students who may go without.

It is no secret, and a sad fact, that too many students who attend Elmore County Schools rely on breakfast and lunch during the school year for nutrition. When school is out, far too many of them deal with lack of nutritious meals.

However, the Elmore County Board of Education, the Alabama State Department of Education and the USDA will kick off their food program June 1 at 11:30 a.m. at Wetumpka Middle School. Come out and learn more about the program and how you can get involved to help your neighbors by volunteering.

While schools were closed to students during the COVID-19 Pandemic, food service didn’t stop. While the cafeterias were closed thanks to social distancing, the food service didn’t stop.

Meals were delivered to classrooms, and also neighborhoods for students in need. It took a tremendous amount of work and dedication, and countless volunteers to make that happen. Over 1 million meals were served by this group of dedicated men and women.
