Holtville Elementary has found a way to help support the community through difficult times with their first ever ‘Cereal-Ously’ spring break event.
The event calls for students to bring a cereal box to school, which will in turn be dropped off at the Elmore County food pantry.
Natalie McLemore, school librarian and director for the event, says the idea to have students bring the cereal to school was inspired by an online video.
“We had a student parent come to us because they saw other schools around the country doing the same thing on a Facebook video. We thought it would be fun to challenge the students to bring their own box of cereal before their spring break started,” McLemore said.
The school started collecting cereal last Tuesday, and has so far reached 350 boxes.
“Our goal is to hit 600 boxes before the end of the week. So far people have been coming out in droves to help support the community,” McLemore said.
New Hope, Cain’s Chapel and Shoalcreek Churches have also helped to chip in and spread the word about the event.
“Seeing support from out local churches has just been amazing and we can’t thank them enough. We wouldn’t be where we are right now without them,” McLemore said.
The school will make one last push next Monday to reach their goal of 600 boxes. On Thursday, March 18th, the school will line the boxes up down the hallways of the school to create a domino effect for the students. That’s the final day that boxes will be accepted.
“The kids are super excited about lining the boxes up, but more than that, their willingness to bring this cereal just shows the generosity on their and their family’s part. Getting things are great, but giving is even better,” McLemore said.
Anyone can help donate to help the school reach their goal. If you are interested in donating, you can drop a box off at the front desk of Holtville Elementary, New Hope, Cain’s Chapel, or Shoalcreek Church.
