Mardi Gras has been a staple of the French-American culture for the past 300 plus years – widely known for the current traditions such as masked balls, parades, and floats.

The holiday features fun for entire family, as parents and children alike can eat delicious food, win booth prizes and catch those coveted beautiful, beaded necklaces.

The issue with Mardi Gras in 2021 is, unfortunately, something that we have never had to worry about before – it attracts large crowds.

With the coronavirus pandemic still gripping our nation as a whole, cities across Alabama are having to cancel traditional Mardi Gras celebrations – such as Mobile, which has not been without the event since World War II.

The virus is forcing states and local governments to think outside of the box, and attempt to retain the fun, energetic atmosphere that Mardi Gras delivers on a year-to-year basis.

And you can count on the City of Prattville to come up an idea that does just that.

Say hello to “Yardi Gras,” an event that is encouraging Prattville businesses and citizens to decorate their storefronts, homes, and yards in the traditional Mardi Gras style.

Any home or business is welcome to join, just follow the link –

https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/KgPRv1H/YardiGras21 to be added to the “route” map for the 2021 “Yardi Gras” celebration by February 10th. Participants will be able to enter their business or home into a fun photo contest to claim the “Best of Yardi Gras” award.

And if you’re still wanting more Mardi Gras, turn to downtown Prattville.

After a successful Christmas season, the City of Prattville has once again lit up the downtown area – this time from Feb. 1-16. Lights are featured on the covered bridge, creek side park, and other areas along Main Street in Historic Downtown Prattville.

“If you missed the opportunity to experience the magical light transformation from the Christmas season, here is your chance to enjoy some of the magic during this Mardi Gras season,” said Mayor Bill Gillespie.

“I heard from numerous citizens and business owners who requested to enjoy the lights a little longer. We’re living in a time where we, as a community, have to come together and think outside the box for ways to make memories as we continue battling the COVID-19 pandemic. I am thankful that we have a team in place that is willing to create an atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.”

And Gillespie is right, as Rob Gaston, a Prattville homeowner and participant in this years’ Yardi Gras, is thrilled about the newfound changes.

“My wife and I are definitely excited about this year’s Yardi Gras, and not only that, we encourage others to participate as well,” Gaston said.

“We just wanted to give people something to look forward to during these difficult times,” said Lisa Byrd Executive Assistant to the mayor.

“The support has been great so far, and we are excited to crown our first ever ‘Best of Yardi Gras’ award.”
