WETUMPKA — Colby Golson made his mamma proud Wednesday morning signing a National Letter of Intent to play football at the University of West Alabama.

His signing means that for eight of the past nine years Indians have celebrated signing day and have gone on to play collegiately.

“Colby is here because of what he has done in the classroom, as well as on the football field,” said Indians Football Coach and Athletics Director, Tim Perry.

Golson, a dual sport athlete at Wetumpka, played on the Tribe’s offensive line and will continue to do so for the Livingston-based Tigers.

The University of West Alabama finished the 2019 season 6-5 as a member of Division II’s Gulf South Conference but didn’t play a 2020 season due to Covid. They kickoff the 2021 season March 13 with the Gulf Coast Classic showdown against Savannah State at Mobile’s Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

Paraphrasing part of Perry’s message: “ … within the first few minutes meeting most college coaches, they ask about academics.”

“You have to put the same effort into the academics that you do on the field,” he added, mentioning that Golson’s test scores and GPA were quite impressive.

National Signing Day, traditionally, is held the first Wednesday in February and serves as the kickoff period for when student-athletes can sign a binding National Letter of Intent to play collegiate sports with schools that are members of the NCAA.
