Elmore County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jeremy H. Amerson explained to the EAN how the arrest came about on Jan. 12.

Amerson said that the call came in as a domestic incident at the home in Squaw Ridge around 3:56 p.m.

Family members told deputies that there was a fight, and deputies headed towards the home. On the way, they passed the suspect, Paul Cox, who was driving his vehicle. A pursuit began that involved Elmore Deputies as well as the Eclectic Police Department and Eclectic Police Chief Head.

Cox reportedly pulled his vehicle into a pawn shop parking lot in Eclectic, and exited the vehicle with a handgun. He did not point the gun at officers, Amerson said, but entered the pawn shop.

Officers tased Cox, which had no effect, Amerson said. Cox was then taken to the ground by officers, with no shots fired or any further incident.

When deputies made contact with family members in the home, they learned that Cox had allegedly threatened to kill a family member while they were in the bedroom of the home. Two family members were able to get out of the bedroom and escape to the living room.

That is when Cox allegedly walked outside of the residence and began shooting rounds into the house in the area of the living room through a glass door. Fortunately, no one was hit, Amerson said.

Cox allegedly fled the scene in a vehicle, and was encountered by deputies, beginning the chase and ultimate arrest at the pawn shop.

Once in custody Cox was allegedly found in possession of controlled substances, marijuana and other items bringing the multiple charges.

He remains in Elmore County jail under the charges and bonds listed above.
