Giving Tuesday is Dec. 1: OAHS Asks For Donations to Save Historic Treasures in Old Autauga

FROM LARRY CAVER, PRESIDENT

OLD AUTAUGA HISTORICAL SOCIETY (OAHS)

We want our local lovers of HISTORY to remember OAHS on GIVING TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2020. We are NOT (yet) set up to receive donations on-line, but we are a non-profit corporation. Our mission is sharing and preserving the history of OLD AUTAUGA COUNTY, which also includes some early settlements in present-day Elmore and Chilton Counties. We currently are restoring the old Vine Hill Presbyterian Church near Jones, the old Mulberry Schoolhouse at Mallard’s Chapel, as well as some older cemeteries across the county.

Nunn Cemetery (1836) suffered serious damage in the recent storm.

Most Recently: John Dennis and Mary Jane Martin Dennis have checked out several cemeteries in the county. They report that the NUNN CEMETERY (1836) has suffered damage from the recent hurricane. This is one of our oldest cemeteries in OLD AUTAUGA. The brick wall surrounding it may date back to the 1830s. It is a treasure that needs to be SAVED. The earliest grave is for James NUNN (1793-1836).

OAHS Board of Directors just approved an emergency motion to take on the NUNN Cemetery as a maintenance only project similar to what we do for the Lewis Jones Cemetery. OAHS is now able to accept DONATIONS specifically for the NUNN CEMETERY. There is a great need for chainsaws, blades, fuel, etc., to cut up these trees and remove off the walls. If you wish to donate for this cleanup effort, send donations payable to OAHS, P.O. Box 622, Autaugaville, AL 36003. OAHS is a non-profit corporation.

If you wish to volunteer to help with cleanup, contact John Dennis or myself. john.dennis@knology.net

We have a wish list of other properties to save and/or mark with historic preservation markers as well. No one is paid from OAHS for any work that is performed. God bless you all during this Season of GIVING. Larry Caver, President; mail any donations to OAHS,
