Pancakes are wonderful, and can feed the body. But this morning it was a reminder that they can also feed the soul and the heart with love and friendship.

On Oct. 17 the Stanhope Elmore High School JROTC held a pancake breakfast fundraiser, with a lot of help from the Front Porch Grill and American Legion Post 133 of Millbrook.

Front Porch donated supplies, while the American Legion provided a cook and a place for the breakfast. Over $1,400 was raised in the fundraiser, but it isn’t the JROTC that directly benefitted.

1SG James Chambers and Col. Charles Bonasera run the JROTC program at SEHS, and along with the Cadets, made the decision to donate all of the proceeds to some “Super Kids.”

The Special Needs Unit at SEHS is run by Ms. Smith and Ms. Barnes. The JROTC program presented the teachers with the proceeds from the fundraiser to be used for future projects involving their students.

Some time back, Cadets nicknamed the students in the Special Needs Unit as “Super Kids” and it has stuck. It is also extremely appropriate.

This was actually the second year for such a fundraiser, and the proceeds have been used for wonderful things for the “Super Kids.” That includes helping fund the purchase of IPads, field trips, Christmas/Year End Parties and more.

The JROTC Cadets have formed a very special bond with the “Super Kids” over the years and are very active in their school days and programs. 1SG Chambers said that this year the JROTC Military Ball is inviting them to be a part of their program as well.

SEHS Principal Ewell Fuller showed his appreciation to the JROTC program Tuesday morning, thanking them for their continued support of the “Super Kids” and everything they do that brings positivity to the school.

Thank you to the JROTC staff and Cadets for reminding us, it truly is better to give than to receive. Thank you to the American Legion Post 133 and the Front Porch Grill for your help in bringing big smiles to some truly “Super Kids.” SEE MORE PHOTOS BELOW.
