WELCOME’s October Food Drop Serves 173 Area Families in Millbrook

By Gerri Miller, EAN Staff Writer

Volunteers were busy helping the 173 families who came out this past Thursday for the Welcome Food Pantry’s October Food Drop in the parking lot of the Climate Control Storage Facility parking lot in Millbrook.

Director D’Ann Pendley said the organization had a great volunteer turnout. “People are just more aware of what we are doing, and many different organizations have been sending volunteers,” she said. “God has really blessed us beyond measure.”

She gave as an example of a post she put on Facebook a couple of weeks back asking for food donations and a photo showing that the shelves inside the organization’s doors were nearly empty.

“We got 35,000 hits on Facebook from that post,” she said. Shortly afterwards, another photo showed full shelves once again once area churches, businesses and individuals found out the need.

More support for the Food Drop has meant more food for the agency’s clients.  There are now 13 food stations where clients ride through and have their car trunks filled with food such as milk, grapes, plums, butternut and yellow squash, salad fixings, crackers, chips, and pop tarts. The clients also get frozen bags from Chick-Fil-A and KFC donations.

All the food is provided by the Montgomery Area Food Bank with donations reimbursing the cost of transportation.

With the holidays coming, there will always be a need for some in our area and donations are appreciated greatly, either monetary or non-perishable food.

The next Food Drop will be December 10th. Elmore/Autauga News is sponsoring the food drop, but Pendley said she is looking for volunteers to help organize and distribute the food. To sponsor a Food Drop, or volunteer, call her at (334) 568-9919.
