ELMORE/AUTAUGA NEWS

The Elmore County Commission has Issues a response relating to an announcement today by Gov. Kay Ivey and a new Mega Prison to be located in Elmore County. The Commission had pushed for the new prison to be located property already owned by the state. However, that was not the direction taken by Alabama Department of Corrections, and the prison will be located in Tallassee. Construction will begin next year.

From the Elmore County Commission:

Today’s announcement by Governor Ivey of the future Elmore County State prison site brings mixed emotions in the county.

The Elmore County Commission, along with the neighboring municipalities adjoining Autauga County, and other community partners have long been in lock step for years advocating that western Elmore County has been and continues to be a great asset to the state of Alabama’s prison industry.

While today’s announcement shifts the future men’s facility to a site off Rifle Range Road in southeastern Elmore County, the Commission appreciates the administration’s recognition of Elmore County as an asset to the prison industry and looks forward to working with the Governor, her administration, our legislative delegation and neighboring local governments. We will begin the process of reimagining western Elmore County.

In addition with the new men’s facility being located off a county road in southeastern Elmore County, the County Commission will also work to efficiently process the required approvals for the new utility installations and improvements to Rifle Range Road to accommodate the massive development and new impacts.
