October is Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month; A New Best Friend is Waiting for You…

Humane Society of Elmore County News

It is hard to believe that October is only two days away though 2020 ‘going fast’ is probably a very good thing. October is Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month, however, and something we can certainly get behind. October really is a great month to come find a new best friend (including cats and other little critters that Shelters care for) from your area Shelter. The weather is finally bearable for that additional time outside helping your new dog learn housetraining perhaps, and for longer walks and play time outside.

A big reason so many dogs (especially) end up at Shelters is there was not enough planning or thought given as to what it takes to raise a dog appropriately, the costs of care involved, or in getting the ‘right’ dog for the family or living situation. The purpose of our Adoption Application is to help prospective adopters adopt the pet that will be a good fit for their current living arrangement, wants, needs, finances, and ability to not only care for but to give the pet what IT needs as well. All puppies are cute, but if an adopter lives in a small apartment and works all day, then an active Labrador pup guaranteed to chew everything and that will eventually turn into a 70 lb adult just might not be a great fit. A reactive and nervous small dog might be risky in a home with a toddler, and a declawed kitty certainly cannot go to an adopter who wants an outdoor cat! So, bear with us as we ask questions about lifestyle, home and family as we truly do have not only our pet’s best interest at heart, but the adopter’s as well.

Adopters also need to allow any new pet time to adjust to their new home. Pets are like humans in that some are happy-go-lucky no matter where they are and view any change as a new adventure, while others are shy and have a harder time dealing with new environments and experiences. Some Shelter pets have suffered the trauma of neglect, death of an owner, or even abuse, and those will need time to develop trust in their new home and situation. For these pets it can be a matter of days, a week or even a month or so, but most will end up being wonderful pets if they are simply given the time to adjust and learn to trust that they have a permanent and loving home. Be honest with yourself about your own patience level and that of your family as you cannot force these pets to adapt on your timeline. For those of us who think our pets truly enrich our lives, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing the light ‘turn on’ in a scared pet’s eyes and watch them realize that they are loved and treasured. We think the rewards of adopting a pet in need of a second chance at a loved life is truly worth it for pet and people alike!

And we truly love being ‘matchmakers’ for pets and people! That is why we have a “Wish List Adoption Application” where you can tell us what you are looking for with as much detail as you like in regards to breed, size, coat type, energy level, sex, age, etc. The more we know the better we can help you find a great match that will be a lifetime fit for the pet and your home and family. Trust us – it works, as we have surprised a few folks lately about a great match that did, indeed, turn out to be THE perfect pet for them!
