Huntingdon Students Inducted into Honor Societies

Montgomery, Ala.—Huntingdon College offers 15 honor societies into which students may earn membership on the basis of academic achievement, leadership, or other merits. Although the installation of student members into some of the honor societies this spring 2020 was hampered because of closures or postponements caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the following honor societies announced inductees (from our area) or students who qualified for induction:

Alpha Beta

Alpha Beta is an honor society for upper-class students honoring excellence in scholarship and encouraging scholastic attainment. Spring 2020 inductees were:

·         Brianna Spiers, Montgomery, Ala.

·         Brianna Gray, Millbrook, Ala.

·         Tristan Powell, Prattville, Ala.

Beta Beta Beta

Beta Beta Beta is a national biological honorary society, installed at Huntingdon College in 1946. The membership consists of third- and fourth-year students who have demonstrated active interest in biology and have taken at least three biology courses, earning an average grade of B or better. Spring 2020 inductees were:

·         Chloe Bartgis ’21, Wetumpka, Ala.

·         Alanna Benjamin ’21, Montgomery, Ala.

·         Shannon Darnell ’20, Eclectic, Ala.

·         Lauren Stehl ’21, Montgomery, Ala.

Gamma Sigma Alpha

Gamma Sigma Alpha, a national Greek academic honor society, promotes intellectual interaction between and encourages scholarship by Greek students. Spring 2020 inductees were:

·         Alanna Benjamin ’21, Chi Omega, Montgomery, Ala.

·         Kelvin Bowser ’21, Phi Beta Sigma, Chisolm, Ala.

·         Emily McBrien ’21, Phi Mu, Millbrook, Ala.

·         Temple Prewitt ’21, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Montgomery, Ala.

·         Brianna Spiers ’21, Alpha Omicron Pi, Montgomery, Ala.

Kappa Kappa Psi

Kappa Kappa Psi is a national honorary band society that recognizes service and leadership among band members. The spring 2020 inductees were:

·        Savanna Cherry ’21, Prattville, Ala.

·        Tiara Griffin ’22, Montgomery, Ala.

Lambda Pi Eta

Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Honor Society, requires that a student earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 overall and 3.5 in the major; has earned at least 12 credit hours in communication studies courses; and ranks in the top 35 percent of his or her class. New inductees this year are:

·         Temple Prewitt ’21, Montgomery, Ala.

Omicron Delta Kappa

Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, was established at Huntingdon in 1989. Spring 2020 inductees were:

·         Alanna Benjamin ’21, Montgomery, Ala.

·         Emily McBrien ’21, Millbrook, Ala.

Order of Omega 2020

Order of Omega is a national Greek leadership honor society founded in 1959. Huntingdon’s Phi Epsilon chapter was chartered in 2007. Spring 2020 inductees were:

·  Emily McBrien ’21, Phi Mu, Millbrook, Ala.

·  Justala Simpson ’20, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Montgomery, Ala.

Phi Eta Sigma

Phi Eta Sigma is an honor society that recognizes high academic achievement in the first year of college study. Membership eligibility is extended to those who have achieved cumulative grade point averages of 3.5 or better by the end of the first year while enrolled full-time in traditional day courses. The students must also rank in the top 20 percent of their class. Class of 2020 graduates who earned Phi Eta Sigma status after their freshman year are:

·         Gavin Baugh, Prattville, Ala.

·         Ashley Nicole DeRamus, Prattville, Ala.

·         Abigail Eike, Montgomery, Ala..

·         Maggie Porter, Montgomery, Ala.

·         Tristan Powell, Prattville, Ala.

Sigma Sigma Sigma 2020

Tri-Sigma is an honor society for Huntingdon College seniors. Members are elected by the faculty and by members honored during the preceding year. The basis of selection is high attainment in scholarship, spirit, and service. The spring 2020 inductees, all members of the Class of 2020, were:

·         Noah Harrison, Montgomery, Ala.

·         Tristan Powell, Prattville, Ala.

·         Justala Simpson, Montgomery, Ala.

Sigma Tau Delta

Sigma Tau Delta is an honor society whose purpose is to confer distinction upon students of English language and literature. The following students qualified for induction in spring 2020, though the induction ceremony has been postponed:

·         Gavin Baugh ’20, Prattville, Ala.

·         Amber Ford ’21, Montgomery, Ala.

·         Heidi Gilmore ’21, Prattville, Ala.

·         Noah Harrison ’20, Montgomery, Ala.

·         Jennifer Knox ’20, Alexander City, Ala.

·         Laura Vermillion ’21, Montgomery, Ala.

·         Lavia Walker ’20, Montgomery, Ala.

Theta Alpha Kappa

Theta Alpha Kappa is the only national honor society serving the needs of and honoring excellence among those involved in the study of religion and/or theology. There were no inductees into Huntingdon’s chapter in spring 2020.
