The Millbrook Civitan Club is selling super sweet Vidalia onions as a fundraiser which will benefit the community. The cost of a ten-pound bag of onions is $10 with $4.50 of that amount staying with the club.

Onion orders need to be turned in by April 29th. The onions will be dropped off during the first week in May, said Civitan President Ken Gabehart.

Civitan Secretary Susan Stringer said the organization has been selling onions since 2011. “We take preorders in March through April with delivery in May.”

She said this is one of the organization’s big fundraisers for its service projects

The Millbrook Club does a big Halloween party for Sugarberry in Wetumpka, which falls under the ARC umbrella, Stringer said. “We also do Easter baskets for Azalea Training Center. We participate in Boo Fest, Cops and Kids, Food Drops with W.E.L.C.O.M.E., and Christ Community Café.”

Sugarberry in Wetumpka is a program in Wetumpka for adults with intellectual disabilities and the Azalea Training Center is a program in Millbrook for such individuals.

Millbrook Senior Program Director Olivia Venable late last year recognized the Millbrook Civitan Club and other individuals instrumental in the construction of the Seniors’ raised vegetable garden beds at Robinson Springs UMC.

Stringer said donations are also made to Camp ASCCA, Brentwood Children’s Home, Mary Ellen’s Hearth and many more. “We try to put as much money back into our community as possible,” she said.

Civitan International was founded in Birmingham in 1917. The organization was started to work primarily with special needs children and adults. Now, Civitan International is more than 500 clubs strong supporting thousands of causes worldwide

Local officers include Gabeheart, Stringer, President-elect Penny Nichols, and Treasurer Brenda Kelley. The local club meets at Habanero’s on the 2nd and 4th Thursday night of each month at 6 p.m. However, due to the COVID19 crisis, the meetings have been cancelled until further notice.

To order a bag of onions, visit Millbrook Civitans on Facebook and post your order, e-mail Gabeheart at Keng@ALALM.ORG,  message Susan Hancock Stringer on Facebook or talk to any Civitan member.
