Stanhope Elmore High School students are lining up awards, accolades and scholarships.

This time it’s senior Tyler Wilson who has been recently awarded the Raymond E. and Eleanor H. Loyd Scholarship to Auburn University.

The full-tuition scholarship, which is awarded to engineering students with a good academic record, is only given to high school students in Elmore County.

Raymond Loyd was a design engineer at General Electric Co. in Louisville, Ky., and founded Derby Fabricating, later Derby Industries, one of the country’s top fabricators for non-metallic and insulation components for the automotive industry.

Wilson, who participated in the AP chemistry and calculus programs at SEHS, says that the two subjects have always been something that has interested him.

“Math has always been my favorite subject. I had calculus this year and I took two different chemistries my 10th and 11th grade years. It’s just something that’s always clicked with me,” Wilson said.

Wilson said he had to fill out a two-page application to be in the running for the scholarship, but had some doubts about whether or not he’d be one of the recipients.

“I thought to myself, ‘Am I really going to get this? So many people apply.’ So, when I found out that I got it, it made it that much more special,” Wilson said.

Wilson, who is involved in basketball, football, and soccer at SEHS, says he was in the middle of an area basketball game against Wetumpka when he found out about the scholarship.

“It was sent to us by email and my mom actually contacted my dad about it during the middle of my game. He ended up telling my principal and he told me about it after the game. I hadn’t been that excited in a long time,” Wilson said laughing.

SEHS Principal Ewell Fuller had a few words to say about his senior student.

“We’re extremely proud of Tyler. The kid is super smart, super involved. We’re glad we had him here all four years and wish him the best moving forward,” Fuller said.

Wilson is set to attend Auburn University this upcoming Fall and will be majoring in Chemical Engineering.
