Auburn vs Samford: Preview

By Andrew Edwards

Staff Writer

Auburn’s 2019 season surely has to be frustrating for its fans.

What could potentially be seen as an all-time great defense this season has been overshadowed by a largely inept offense.

Part of it is having a true freshman QB and a young offensive line, but at some point, you have to wonder when those younger players will step up for 60 minutes and help out a defense that typically carries the load.

Again, Nix had a very rough first three quarters this past weekend against Georgia before turning it on in the 4th. It was little too late at that point, but it did have to provide some hope for Auburn fans moving forward.

Now, they turn to a tune-up game against Samford before facing Alabama in Iron Bowl. This is a game that Tigers will win easily but should use as a confidence builder for Nix as a passer.

The schedule has been brutal for Auburn this year, and I do think that Nix is perhaps getting a bit too much criticism as he’s had to play elite teams all season long. With this Samford game, Auburn should game plan to get Nix as many passes as possible before pulling him and getting him rest for next week.

Players to watch: All Auburn Starters

Get a lead, pull the starters. That’s going to be the underlying game plan this week for Auburn. They’re going to need everyone healthy before the Iron Bowl next weekend, especially Nix, as the Tigers are extremely thin at the QB position.

Key Matchup: Gus Malzahn vs the Waffle House Menu

It’s a tradition that Gus and Kristi Malzahn go to Waffle House after every Auburn victory. It’s easy to predict a Tigers victory this weekend, but what’s more difficult to project is what Gus will order from the menu. Only time will tell.
