News from Humane Society of Elmore County: Appointments for Adoption Are Working at Shelter

FROM THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF ELMORE COUNTY

WHY ADOPTIONS AND INTAKE BY APPOINTMENT?

As much as we would all like to think COVID-19 is gone, given the numbers being reported from the Tri-County area, it is still very much here and impacting many people. That means we need to continue to take measures to protect each other. For our Shelter, doing intake and adoptions by appointment is our way to help everyone, our staff included, maintain social distancing the least impactful way possible. Ask any retailer and they all say the same thing – either the place is empty, or the world shows up at the same time. So, maintaining our appointment system is an EASY way to keep everyone safely apart from each other.

Doing intakes by appointment also helps us be ready for what is coming in. Instead of having to drop what we are in the middle of for another unexpected intake, we can make sure to have a kennel or cage ready. Intake appointments are also safer for the public as that way we don’t have multiple animals showing up at the same time in our parking lot. Some folks do not adequately control the animals they are bringing in, so we can react much better knowing what to expect.

For adoptions, we are making sure that every ‘adoptable’ pet we have is posted on-line where it can be seen. The easiest way to search for a pet other than our website (www.elmorehumane.org) is either: www.petfinder.com or www.adoptapet.com – on these websites you can narrow your search and see pets in any Shelter or Rescue Group starting at those closest to you. These postings change daily as we all add new pets for adoption and take off those that have been adopted so don’t just look once and give up. On both you can set up alerts as well to notify you if something is posted that meets whatever criteria you set.

When you see a pet of ours you are interested in the FIRST step is to do our ADOPTION APPLICATION. You can email us at hselco@bellsouth.net for us to send you one, or it is on our website above (and we are working at making it an on-line form), or we are happy to give you a hard copy. You will need to fill that in completely, sign and date it, and get it back to us. Once we receive and approve your application, we will contact you to set up a day/time to meet and hopefully adopt the pet in question. And once you are approved, if the pet you thought you wanted just isn’t ‘the one,’ we are happy to see if we might have another that will be a great fit – trust us, we are actually pretty good at helping match up the right pet with you once we know more of what you are looking for and about your home, family, experience, etc. Our goal is an adoption that works for both your family and for our pet.

And if you are still skeptical? We have actually done MORE adoptions in May ’20 using this new application/appointment process than we did in May ’19, AND that same trend has continued into June! We have some very knowledgeable staff so let us help you as we truly are working for both your best interest and that of our pets.
