The Stanhope Elmore High School Army JROTC Mustang Battalion filled the school gymnasium with pride and applause May 1, as cadets, families, community members, and presenters gathered for the program’s 14th annual awards ceremony honoring the 2025-26 school year.

More than 100 cadets sat together as their achievements in leadership, service and academics were recognized, reflecting not only individual success but the strength of a program deeply rooted in the community. There are 216 total cadets in the program. The ceremony served as a reminder of the role JROTC plays in shaping young leaders while bringing together those who support them both inside and outside the classroom.

Leadership for the program includes Senior Army Instructor Command Sgt. Maj. Nathaniel Bartee and Army Instructor Sgt. 1st Class Wayne Kindley, who guided cadets throughout the year.

“The strength of the SEHS JROTC program lies in the heart of the cadets,” Bartee said. “We do not teach history; we prepare those who will write it. Legacy is built by dedication, and our cadets are the living proof that honor never fades. We are SE!”

Kindley emphasized the deeper meaning behind the ceremony, noting the consistency and discipline required to earn recognition.

“Friday’s presentation was not just about the ribbons earned or the trophies; it is about the quiet, consistent discipline they have demonstrated throughout this year,” Kindley said. “When they put on this uniform, they chose to hold themselves to a higher standard, and looking out at this formation during the ceremony, I see the future leaders of our community and our nation.”

Several cadets and teams were also recognized for standout achievements at the state level. Bartee highlighted the battalion’s 2025 Alabama State Raider Champions in the mixed division, along with the 2026 Alabama A&M State Physical Fitness Champions: Emanuel Peralta, Anthony Abete, Samaria Hughes and Rekeria Tyes. The battalion also earned second place overall at the 2026 Alabama A&M State Drill Meet.

Individual honors were also announced for the 2025-26 Air Rifle Team’s top shooters, Cadet Capt. Emanuel Peralta and Cadet Sgt. 1st Class Jakayla Milton.

As the ceremony concluded, the decorated cadets reflected months of hard work, discipline and commitment, as well as the unwavering support of a community invested in shaping its future leaders.
