Butterfly Bridge shares how active parenting helps prevent child abuse

From: Butterfly Bridge CAC Satellite Office of Autauga County

Active parenting helps prevent child abuse. At Butterfly Bridge, we believe prevention starts with education, encouragement, and support.

Active Parenting gives parents tools to:

Communicate with empathy

Foster independence and mutual respect, Encourage positive behavior

Use **non-violent discipline**

Build healthier, more connected families

When parents feel confident and supported, children are safer.

Understanding Child Abuse:

According to the CDC, child abuse can take many forms:

• Emotional abuse– shaming, name-calling, rejecting, or withholding love

• Neglect– failing to meet a child’s physical *or* emotional needs

• Sexual abuse– exposing or forcing a child into sexual activity

• Physical abuse – hitting, shaking, burning, or using force that causes harm

The reality is heartbreaking:

• 1 in 7 children experienced abuse or neglect last year

• 90% of abuse is committed by someone the child knows

• 68% of victims are abused by a family member

Why Parenting Education Matters:

Stress, unresolved trauma, lack of parenting skills, and unrealistic expectations can increase the risk of abuse. The CDC identifies **strong parenting skills** as one of the most effective ways to prevent child abuse.

How Active Parenting Helps:

• Teaches non-violent discipline (logical consequences, problem-solving, “I” messages)

• Encourages connection over control

• Promotes empathy and emotional understanding

• Builds confidence, courage, and self-esteem in both parents and children

As educator Rudolf Dreikurs said, “Children need encouragement like plants need water.”

Prevention is possible. Healing is possible. Support matters. Butterfly Bridge is committed to protecting children, strengthening families, and breaking cycles of abuse through advocacy, education, and compassionate care. If you or someone you know needs help, please reach out. Together, we can keep children safe.
