ALEA investigating Officer-Involved shooting fatality in Montgomery

From Alabama Law

Enforcement Agency

MONTGOMERY – At Approximately, 9:20 a.m., on Thursday, May 22, the Montgomery Police Department (MPD) was notified of an armed robbery which occurred on Herron Street in Montgomery. Initial reports indicated an individual was shot and a suspect fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle. The victim was taken to a Montgomery area hospital for treatment.
Subsequently, MPD issued a law enforcement bulletin for the stolen vehicle. Shortly after receiving the bulletin, a Special Agent assigned to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), who was assisting the Metro Area Crime Suppression (MACS) Unit, located the stolen vehicle on Upper Wetumpka Road in Montgomery and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was later
identified as Raymond Tellis Jr., 19, of Montgomery.
During the course of the traffic stop, the Special Agent attempted to arrest Tellis, however, Tellis resisted and pulled a firearm from his waistband. As a result, the Special Agent discharged their weapon, fatally wounding Tellis. No officers were injured over the course of the incident.
Special Agents that are not assigned to the Montgomery area were called in to conduct the officer-involved shooting investigation. Nothing further is available as the investigation is ongoing. Once complete, the findings will be turned over to the Alabama Attorney General’s Office.
