A corrections officer who recently worked for Elmore County Jail found herself behind bars, charged with promoting prison contraband.

Lita Williams, 57, of Titus was under investigation over the past couple of weeks, according to Elmore Sheriff Bill Franklin. He contacted the EAN today to report her arrest.

“About two weeks ago we conducted a search of cells throughout the jail, which is something we do unannounced and on a regular basis,” Franklin said. During this search we found an older cell phone that belonged to an inmate. After we did a dump of information from the phone, it revealed the inmate had been talking to Williams.”

Franklin said through the investigation, it was revealed that Williams had allegedly provided the phone to the inmate so they could talk.

She was arrested Wednesday night, Franklin said.

“She (Williams) has been forthcoming with us about the indiscretion, and she is now in jail. This case will be presented to the next Grand Jury perhaps in June,” Franklin said.

Franklin said that periodic searches are necessary, but this case is different as they have had to arrest one of their own. “It is disappointing,” he said.

No bond is currently listed for Williams, but we will update when the bond amount is available.
