Hope Hull, Ala. – The Alabama Safari Park has welcomed its newest resident, a female Grant’s zebra foal. Silvia gave birth to Silver on February 9 after a year-long pregnancy. At birth, Silver weighed approximately 60 to 70 pounds and stood roughly two and a half feet tall.
Park Director Kait Wilson said: “Both Silvia and Silva are doing well. The foal is running around and keeping her parents, Silvia and Blitz, busy. Guests can see the family in the back safari.”
The gestation period for Grant’s zebras ranges from 360 to 395 days. A newborn zebra’s stripes will turn from brown to black sometime between the first 9-18 months of life. Silver will stick close to her mother as foals will nurse for up to a year before being weaned.
Visitors can watch Silver enjoying her new habitat and the rest of the herd while exploring the safari drive-thru when the Park returns to its daily schedule on March 1. The park is currently in expansion mode, with a playground, picnic pavilion and food truck expected to be complete by mid-March.
The Alabama Safari Park features three miles of drive-through wildlife viewing from the comfort of your own vehicle. Wagon tours are seasonally available as well. Visitors will enjoy and can feed hundreds of animals, many rare and endangered, that roam freely in a natural setting including a wide variety of antelope, bison, ostriches, Grevy and Grant’s zebras and many more.
