There is a wonderful fact about military veterans. Rarely does their service to their country or community end when their military career is over.
A perfect example of that is the American Legion Post 133 of Millbrook. Members arrived at the Millbrook Police Department recently with a donation of funds as well as toys to help out with Operation Blue Santa.
The program was begun by the Millbrook Police Department many years ago, and has grown exponentially over the years.
Thousands of children who may have gone without a Christmas present have benefitted from the generosity of the community, multiple businesses, churches and organizations such as the American Legion Post 133.
“In all of my years here at the Millbrook Police Department, we have always taken up donations and done what we could for people we came in contact with that had a legitimate need,” Chief P.K. Johnson said. “In our line of work, we see the worst and the best of people. We see families, who through no fault of their own, find themselves in terrible financial circumstances. So, a lot of us at the department over the years have always tried to help.”
But it wasn’t until Lt. Don Pugh approached Chief Johnson many years ago about organizing an official event. Today applications are handed out for families who need a little extra help during the holiday season. Those applications are vetted, and funds generated by area organizations allow for the purchase of new toys for kids in need.
“We could not do what we do without the help of the community and I thank the American Legion Post 133. They have been a part of this official event since it began. This group of men and women amaze me throughout the year with their help to the community and their ability to raise awareness and funds. Reaching out to others in need is the truest representation of love in this Christmas season,” Johnson said.
The American Legion Post 133 raises funds throughout the year for Operation Blue Santa, and recently held a Spaghetti Dinner. Admission was $10 or a donation of a new toy.
Their efforts were rewarded by a large donation delivered to the department last week. Those toys will be distributed in the coming days just in time for Christmas.
