WETUMPKA, ALABAMA—The newly constructed swimming pool at the Wetumpka Y had a grand opening on May 19, 2022, featuring an exciting ribbon cutting for the community to honor those involved that made it happen and a chance to get a “first glance,” at Wetumpka’s newest addition. The pool has an “L” shape design, with a zero-entry, and a 6-lane co-competition area for swimmers. It features over 7,000 square feet (about twice the area of a tennis court) of the deck, a huge slide, and water toys in the kids’ area.
The new pool replaces the old one that was in service for more than 50 years.
Other features are a family section with a water slide and umbrella fountain for the kids which includes a walk-in entrance. It has been in the planning for three years and was spurred on to completion by a very generous gift from the Bruce Christian family at his mother’s death.
Other funding came primarily through the Montgomery YMCA, and funds raised by the Wetumpka YMCA.
Scott Peterson, Wetumpka YMCA Director said, “This is great new tool for the YMCA to help families and provide an alternative to the river where several people have died this past year,” Scott also added “This is a great platform to help kids learn how to swim and the Family Section has us particularly happy.” Lesson information can be found by calling the YMCA for availability. The YMCA is offering a splash Bash for the entire community to come and swim, even if not a Y member, and see and enjoy the new pool on Saturday, May 21 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Elmore County Commission Chairman Troy Stubbs said, “There is something for everyone at the YMCA. Things like building a swimming pool will not only bring recreational activities for families, but it will develop swimming programs for our schools and provide life-saving swim lessons. We have had too many children drown in the Coosa River in the last 10 years and teaching kids how to swim at an early age will be a real difference-maker for our community.”
With close to 2,000 members, the YMCA knows the impact this pool will make on Wetumpka and takes immense pride in its work to strengthen the community. As summer is around the corner, Wetumpka’s YMCA is now preparing for summer camp to share the experience of how one pool can make a difference in our lives.
