Melanie Baker, a kindergarten teacher at Redland Elementary School, was recognized during last night’s Elmore County Board of Education meeting for earning her National Board Certification, one of the highest honors in the teaching profession.
Dr. Laura Crowe, director of the East Alabama Regional In-Service Center at Auburn University, presented Baker with the prestigious award. National Board Certification is a voluntary, performance-based credential that recognizes educators who meet rigorous standards through a peer-review process. Teachers must demonstrate their impact on student learning, mastery of subject content, and a deep commitment to their profession through extensive portfolio submissions and assessments aligned with the National Board’s five core propositions.
Those principles emphasize a teacher’s dedication to students, knowledge of subject matter, responsibility for managing and monitoring learning, reflective practice, and active participation in professional learning communities. Educators who achieve certification often strengthen their effectiveness in the classroom, contribute to higher student achievement, and take on leadership roles within their schools.
“Congratulations to Melanie Baker, because she received National Board Certification in December 2025, and I have to give her props,” Crowe said. “We have a cohort at Auburn, and she drove multiple times back and forth to Auburn to receive support.”
Cory Eckstein, principal of Redland Elementary School, also praised Baker’s dedication and commitment to her students.
“What a privilege to work with a teacher who goes out of their way to model the importance of learning,” Eckstein said. “Mrs. Baker is an outstanding teacher, and Redland is lucky to have a teacher who goes above and beyond anyone’s expectations to be the best teacher she can be for her students. No one is surprised that she would accomplish such an achievement.”
Baker’s accomplishment reflects both professional excellence and a deep personal investment in her students, highlighting the lasting impact of passionate educators in the classroom and the broader school community.
