The Marbury Bulldogs Flag Football team defeated previously unbeaten B.C. Rain, 24-8, in the 2nd round of the Class 1A-5A playoffs, to advance to the quarterfinals for the second consecutive season.

“It is an incredible achievement and I am happy to be a part of it,” said Marbury Flag Football Coach Zachary Cummings. “I am extremely proud of the girls and all their hard work throughout this season. Especially watching how they have grown together as a team and continue to grow individually. I’m proud to be their coach and I am excited about the history we are making.”

The Bulldogs won eight games in the regular season with wins over Billingsley, Alabama Christian Academy, Calhoun, Marion, LAMP, Charles Henderson, Wetumpka and Wilcox Central. Marbury won their Class 1A-5A 1st round playoff game over Booker T. Washington 12-7, and their 2nd round game over B.C. Rain 24-8.

“I’ve been impressed with this team’s grit, determination, and never give up mentality,” said Coach Cummings. “Their performance in the playoff games shows their toughness and dedication. This type of mindset is important when trying to make a long playoff run.”

To advance to the Final Four, the Bulldogs will have to defeat Brewbaker Tech in the quarterfinals. Brewbaker Tech has blown out both of their opponents in the playoffs, defeating Elberta 40-6 in the 1st round and Valley 31-0 in the 2nd round. The Rams are 13-3 on the season.

“I know that they’re a great team and very well coached. They are very athletic and very versatile with their offense and defense,” said Coach Cummings. “We’ll have to stick to our identity and stay disciplined for 48 minutes both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. We will need to execute and take advantage of the opportunities given. If we limit mistakes, and match their energy for four quarters, we’ll give ourselves a great chance to move on.”

Marbury’s record sits at 10-4 on the season. The quarterfinal matchup against Brewbaker Tech will take place on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, with the winner advancing to the Class 1A-5A Final Four.
