Prattville YMCA Assistant General Director Keith Cantrell officially retires, Oct. 27, 2025, after 39 years and three months of service.

Cantrell joined the Prattville YMCA in 1986 as youth sports director, where he helped introduce countless children to teamwork and healthy living. When the Bradford Branch opened in 2000, he stepped into the role of branch director. For the past decade, he has served as assistant general director and development director, leading efforts to support families through fundraising and community outreach.

“I think everybody knows when it’s their time,” said Cantrell. “I’ve been at the Y for over 39 years, so it’s time for somebody with new and fresh ideas to jump in there.”

During his tenure, Cantrell helped launch beloved fundraising events such as the Kevin Turner Golf Tournament, Great Grits Cookoff, and Sink-a-Palooza, supporting essential programs including the Coach-A-Child Scholarship Campaign.

“I’m definitely going to miss people and the events the most,” said Cantrell. “When you’ve been doing something for a long time, you build a lot of relationships, and the toughest challenge going forward will be to maintain those.”

Taking on Cantrell’s responsibilities, Fitness Branch Director Jon Grooms will step into the assistant director’s role, while Bradford Branch Assistant Director June Dorough will assume duties as development director.

“My advice for them is not to worry about the guy who left,” said Cantrell. “Do the job the way you want to do it and make it your own.”

From fitness classes and swim programs to youth sports and social events, the Prattville YMCA continues its mission of enhancing wellness and fostering community — a mission Cantrell helped strengthen for nearly four decades.

“His dedication, passion, and heart for this community have helped shape the YMCA we know and love today,” said a Facebook post from Prattville YMCA. “Thank you, Keith, for your commitment, leadership, and lasting legacy at the Prattville YMCA and in the lives of so many. You will always be part of our Y family!”
