The Elmore County Commission declares Sept. 17-23, Constitution Week, during their work session meeting, Sept. 8, 2025, at the Elmore County Courthouse.
Constitution Week commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution, which began 238 years ago on Sept. 17, 1787. The ratification process continued until May 29, 1790, when Rhode Island became the final state to approve the historic document.
The tradition of Constitution Week began in 1955, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first national proclamation, establishing an annual reminder of the importance of America’s founding principles.
“Proclamations are a great way for us to publicize anniversaries, but we also do things with schools and libraries to help educate the public,” said a representative of the Alabama Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
With this proclamation, Elmore County highlights the importance of remembering and teaching U.S. history and the values that continue to shape the nation.
