Bill Gillespie, Mayor of the City of Prattville, declares September Chiari Malformation Awareness Month in his report, Sept. 2, 2025, at the Prattville City Council Meeting at City Hall.
Chiari malformation is a serious disorder in which brain tissue extends into the spinal canal, affecting the cerebellum—the part of the brain responsible for balance and coordination. The condition occurs when the skull is abnormally small or misshapen, causing pressure on the brain and forcing it downward.
“Many individuals with Chiari malformation go undiagnosed for many years due to the complexity and variety of symptoms, making awareness and education critical for early detection and proper treatment,” said Gillespie.
According to studies, Chiari malformations affect roughly 1 in every 1,000 people in the United States. However, the true number may be higher, as many patients do not develop symptoms until adolescence or adulthood—or may never be diagnosed at all.
“Increasing public understanding of this disease can lead to early diagnosis, improved treatment, and better support systems for patients and their families,” said Gillespie.
By joining communities nationwide in this awareness campaign, the City of Prattville hopes to bring greater attention, compassion, and resources to those living with Chiari malformation.
