Joey Wiginton announces bid in mayoral campaign in Tallassee, vows open-door leadership

From: Joey Wiginton

Tallassee, AL

Joey Wiginton is running for Mayor of Tallassee in the upcoming municipal election on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

A Tallassee resident for nearly 30 years, Joey is a husband, father, grandfather, Christian, business owner, and proud community member who believes the door to City Hall should always be open.

For years, he has invested in the community by supporting local businesses, opening his own business in Tallassee, creating jobs, and regularly attending city council meetings out of a genuine concern for Tallassee’s future. He emphasizes that his campaign is about unity and collaboration, not politics behind closed doors.

“I’m running for Mayor of Tallassee because our town deserves leadership that listens and takes action,” said Wiginton. “My promise is simple: open the door, welcome every voice, and build a stronger future for Tallassee together.”

Investing in Community Life

Joey and his wife, Nancy, purchased and restored the historic Mount Vernon Performing Arts Theatre in 2024, which has quickly become a centerpiece of community life. The theatre now hosts movies and special events, bringing people downtown and reminding Tallassee of what vibrant community spaces can do.

In August, they hosted the Alabama Has Talent event and an Elvis tribute show, both of which drew crowds and positive attention to Tallassee.

Leadership Style

Asked how his leadership would differ from the current administration, Wiginton points to two key changes:

Wiginton says his leadership will look very different from the current administration in two key ways.

First, he plans to create “Problem Committees”made up of residents, business owners, and others with relevant expertise to work on solutions for major projects. For example, if the city wants to build soccer fields, he would involve parents, coaches, and local leaders in the process so that recommendations are shaped by the people most invested in the outcome.

Second, Wiginton wants to change how city government communicates. Instead of relying only on council meetings, where many residents can’t attend due to work or family obligations, he would make updates more accessible through social media, radio, and town halls at varied times. His goal is to make sure residents always know what’s happening and have opportunities to engage.

Funding Recreation Projects

Wiginton has also been asked how the city can afford to pursue new recreation opportunities. His answer: partnerships, sponsorships, and grants.

“Not every project requires big tax dollars. Local sponsorships can fund smaller efforts, while larger projects, like trails, fields, or Rec Center improvements, can be supported with grants and fundraising. When people see a clear vision and transparency, they’ll want to be part of it.”

Top Priorities for Tallassee

Looking ahead, Wiginton identifies three key priorities:

  • Housing. Enforcing codes while also working with landlords to improve neglected rental homes, ensuring safe housing and stronger neighborhoods.
  • Economic Development. Wiginton also points to the need for a clear, focused plan to attract new businesses. He envisions Tallassee becoming more intentional about identifying the kinds of restaurants, shops, and services residents want, creating incentives for them, and working closely with the TRA to connect opportunities with available properties.
  • Recreation and Riverfront Growth. Enhancing the city’s greatest asset, the Tallapoosa River, by developing kayak and canoe access, tournaments, festivals, and trails, alongside improvements at the Rec Center and more outdoor spaces.

A Vision for Tallassee’s Future

His platform emphasizes economic revitalization and growth: filling empty storefronts with thriving retail, encouraging new businesses on both the East and West sides of Tallassee, and fostering a strong, united vision for the city. He wants Tallassee to be a place that draws visitors in, and one where people are proud to stay, live, and invest.

“I’ve spent years showing up because I care about where Tallassee is headed,” Wiginton said. “This campaign isn’t about back-room decisions or shutting people out. It’s about bringing people together to solve challenges and build a stronger future for our families. Tallassee has given so much to me and my family. Now it’s my turn to give back by helping build a future where our children and grandchildren can thrive.”
