Drey Barrett etched his name in the Holtville history books with a dominant performance in the 2023 Class 5A post-season, pitching a complete game victory in all five rounds of the playoffs, to include the state championship clinching win over Sardis. It was Holtville’s first state championship in baseball in more than 40 years. He was named 2nd Team All-State in Class 5A as a senior in 2024, and signed with the University of Southern Mississippi.
The former Bulldog made an impact with Southern Miss as a freshman, starting 50 games at 3rd base. Barrett didn’t commit an error over his final 11 games. At the plate, he had a .254 average and hit 9 home runs with 30 RBIs at the plate. He had a 7-game hit streak during the season, and a 3-hit game against South Alabama. Barrett also had 3 RBIs in a game against Appalachian State and 4 RBIs in a game against Louisiana.
“The experience, the fanbase, and the family there is a special experience,” said Barrett. “Southern Miss is a special place, and I’m blessed to be able to play baseball there. I believe I played well. I put myself in a good spot for years to come. The work doesn’t stop though, for sure. I want to get better at everything next year, on and off the field.”
The Eagles went 47-16 on the season, which included an 18-game win streak. Barrett cited the streak as the most memorable moment from his freshman year. “We started the season slow and lost some games we shouldn’t have, then we settled in and won 18 or so games straight, helping us host a regional in Hattiesburg.”
Barrett hopes to help his team achieve the ultimate goal in college baseball: winning the College World Series.
For all the current high school athletes with aspirations of playing major Division 1 baseball, Barrett cited some of the biggest challenges. “The game is definitely faster, there is more responsibility, more asked of you, and it is just harder. You have to embrace the challenge and be grateful for the opportunity.”
The Holtville alum is currently at home preparing for his sophomore season at Southern Miss. “I’m at home for the summer lifting, hitting, fielding, and seeing family and friends. I’m grateful for my time at home. I return August 15th and start getting ready for the fall with my teammates and coaches.”
