Sam Floyd and Caden Moxley, incoming freshmen at Stanhope Elmore High School, started their business, FLOX Bait and Lure, over the summer, with the goal of producing quality freshwater fishing bait and inspiring other kids to do what they love.
Floyd and Moxley are long-time friends who love to fish and be outdoors in their free time. Inspired by Mike and Amy Floyd, co-owners of Memories Vintage Market in Prattville and Main Street Vintage Market in Millbrook, they decided to turn their passion into profit.
“After discussing it with our parents, we prayed about it and tested it out because we wanted to make sure it was something we would be able to stick with,” said Moxley.
Their early attempts at crafting lures were a success, giving them the confidence to move forward, naming their business FLOX, a blend of their last names.
FLOX creates its products by melting plastisol at 400 degrees Fahrenheit, adding vibrant dyes and glitter, and injecting the mix into molds. They also add salt to certain lures to help them sink.
“Our products are handcrafted, locally made, and made with love,” said Moxley. “We make sure none of our products have dents in them, and they’re all high-quality before we sell them.”
FLOX offers a wide variety of competitively priced bait options, including crawfish, crappie lures, curly tails, frogs, senkos, and trick worms. They also sell other fishing items such as hats, magnets, stickers, quick-dry towels, and hammocks.
Their dream is to one day open their own bait shop near Lake Jordan, giving anglers a convenient spot to stock up on gear before hitting the water.
“So far, we’ve learned that things aren’t always going to go the way you want it to when you’re just starting out,” said Floyd. “You have to practice and learn what to do and how to fix your mistakes.”
Floyd and Moxley are excited for what lies ahead and deeply grateful for the support they have received from family, friends, and the community. Their journey has also inspired them to give back.
“We want to help others pursue their dreams and show them that all it takes is a little bit of hard work and faith,” said Moxley.
Floyd’s mom, Amy, shared that the boys have already made an impact, recently donating $50 to a little boy who told them he wanted to be an entrepreneur, too.
With their passion driving them and their community behind them, Floyd and Moxley are just beginning to reel in the future they once only dreamed about.
FLOX is available at Main Street Vintage Market and is coming soon to Ingram’s Farmers Market. Follow their Facebook page, FLOX Bait & Lure, to stay up to date on new products.
