We have officially launched the Autauga County 4-H RiverKids program! It was a beautiful morning to be out on our treasured Autauga Creek!
A huge thank you to Skip Lobmiller, Autauga Creek Improvement Committee, City of Prattville, Alabama 4-H, Alabama Scenic River Trail, Autauga County Commission, Krystal Vaith (Chilton County 4-H RiverKids Instructor), Katie Hill(Chambers County 4-H RiverKids Instructor), Dr. Emily Nichols(Alabama State Outdoor Education Specialist), and some of the best 4-H Volunteers around – WE HAD A FANTASTIC FIRST FLOAT!
We got an up-close look at majestic Canadian Geese and marveled at the rich variety of tree species lining the water — especially the stunning cypress trees growing right along (and even in) the creek! One sharp-eyed paddler even discovered a tiny inchworm before we launched, and we all took a moment to admire the little guy before gently returning him to his home. While passing under the bridge, we were amazed by the cliff swallows and their carefully constructed mud nests!
We learned so much — from water safety and paddling techniques to the power of teamwork and a deeper appreciation for our local ecosystem.
We’re already looking forward to next month’s adventure!
Make sure your kids are registered in our system, so that they can reserve a spot as soon as the next float is posted!
