The Prattville Council voted Tuesday to place a temporary moratorium on mini-warehouses and self-storage facilities.
The ordinance states that cities in close proximity to Prattville have experienced a proliferation of businesses that are licensed and authorized to operate such businesses. However, the city finds the overdevelopment of mini-warehouses and self-storage facilities in the city as a detriment effectively limiting the ability of the city to attract diverse types of businesses. The councilors agreed it is in the best interest of the overall economic development to provide for orderly growth and balance of the development of these businesses.
The ordinance reads there is a need for the city to review its existing zoning ordinance to make necessary adjustments and improvements as to these types of business establishments. The city is in the process of hiring a Planning and Development Director to further review the zoning ordinance and address the issue.
Prior to the vote residents were allowed to offer comments on the night’s agenda. Rev. Ell White II told the council he supports the moratorium.
“Because when you go throughout the City of Prattville…it seems like we have more storages and facilities then we do houses around here. I hope you put a moratorium on chicken and coffee, too,” White said. “Because I think we have enough chicken and coffee restaurants. I don’t know who is over the economic, but we have become the laughingstock around here, saying, Prattville has enough chicken and coffee.”
