Prattville, AL – A local Caregiver has earned national recognition for her compassion, skill, and dedication to caring for her clients and their families, standing out among thousands across the country. Debra German from Home Helpers® Home Care of Montgomery & Prattville, AL, is one of only four professional Caregivers nationwide to receive the brand’s prestigious Exceptional Caregiver of the Year Award.
Debra was honored at the brand’s annual Conference in Nashville in April, and her inspiring story is featured in a special video tribute, now available to watch at: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1AWKztvz5E/
Debra joined the River Region Home Helpers Home Care® in August 2023 under the leadership of local franchisees, Stephen and Robyn Davis. Known for her warmth, ingenuity, and unwavering dedication, Debra exemplifies what it means to care with both skill and heart.
One example of Debra’s extraordinary commitment is reflected in the deep bond she formed with two long-time clients who were both bedbound—Mr. Carroll, a Vietnam veteran in hospice care, and Mrs. Carroll, his wife of 69 years, living with dementia. To them, she was “Ms. Debra,” but over time, she became much more: a trusted companion, a source of strength, and family. Whether she was spending an hour gently feeding Mr. Carroll, creatively using a syringe to help him stay hydrated, or staying overnight to comfort Mrs. Carroll during storms, Debra’s compassion never wavered.
“When you’re starting a 24-hour case, it takes a good-sized team to do that,” said Stephen Davis, the agency owner. “Debra very quickly became the anchor for that team, began coaching the other team members, and then building trust with the family, who has been very involved with the care. In fact, they’re part of the overall care team.”
When Mr. Carroll passed away in the hospital, Debra was with Mrs. Carroll providing comfort through her grief, holding her hand until family arrived. Debra and Mrs. Carroll have maintained a strong bond ever since – sharing tears, warm embraces, and heartwarming stories.
“What I really love about this job is seeing the patient being happy and knowing that they are being loved,” said Debra.
Beyond her role at Home Helpers Home Care, Debra serves her broader community with the same servant heart. As a council member in the Town of Elmore and an active supporter of local schools, she leads by example. Within the agency, she’s a mentor to fellow Caregivers, training them not just in technical skills, but in the power of empathy and encouragement.
“In 2024 alone, our agencies’ Caregivers delivered over 9 million of hours of care across more than 1,500 communities in the U.S. and Canada,” said Emma Dickison, CEO & President of the national franchisor, Home Helpers Home Care. “The heart, skill, and unwavering dedication of people like Debra are what truly define the quality of care we provide. Her compassion and consistency exemplify our mission and values.”
