Substitute teachers play an important part in keeping schools running smoothly, often stepping in with little notice to ensure students continue learning without interruption. Though their work can sometimes go unnoticed, the Elmore County Board of Education and Kelly Education recognized Pamela Johnson as the 2025 Substitute Teacher of the Year. Known for her dependability, positive attitude, and ability to adapt in any classroom, Johnson has made a meaningful impact across the district.

Megan-Rhea Nash, Account Manager with Kelly Education, presented the award to Johnson at the May 20 Elmore County Board of Education meeting in Wetumpka.

Kelly Education recently began recognizing a Substitute Teacher of the Month, and those recognitions led to this special award.

“This year, we implemented Substitute of the Month, and we have had some really exceptional subs that have been recognized by our schools. We actually have a substitute teacher with us this evening who was voted on by the entire population of our administrators.

According to Nash, it was Johnson’s ability to assess the situation quickly and respond with confidence and flexibility. Her ability to adapt without hesitation ensures that students remain focused and learning continues.

“Mrs. Johnson is someone that every single principal that we heard from about her shared with us that on the days where they are lacking the number of subs they need that day, they can walk to Mrs. Johnson’s room and say, I actually need you in third grade in PE, and her immediate reaction is, let’s go. Let’s do it,” Nash continued.

Her ability to adjust quickly and stay focused in any setting has made her a dependable part of the school community.

“This is the epitome of what an excellent sub is. If I could have 300 more of her every single day, I would be the happiest person in the world,” Nash said.

Johnson expressed heartfelt gratitude for the recognition.

“Thank you,” she said. “Thank you all. I appreciate it so much.”

Substitute teachers help keep classrooms moving forward when regular staff are out, and right now, schools are in need of dependable people to fill that gap. If you’re someone who enjoys being around students, has time to give, and wants to contribute to your community, stepping in as a substitute could be the right fit. Whether you’re retired, just out of college, or simply curious about the field of education, this role offers a meaningful way to support local schools when it matters most.
