In honor of Memorial Day, the youth group of Cain’s Chapel Methodist Church of Holtville was given American flags to place on graves in the historic cemetery. The flags were provided by American Legion Post 133 of Millbrook and Commander Bobby Boswell.

Harold Grooms, U.S. Army, retired, was a Major in infantry and is a member of Cain’s Chapel. He sent Boswell a note of thanks, along with photos saying the youth placed the flags on the graves of Veterans interred in the cemetery.

Boswell thanked Mr. Grooms for the education he is giving to the youth group, who are our future leaders in this country.

As for the Cain’s Chapel Methodist Church cemetery, it holds the remains of area residents dating back to the earliest burial in 1843.

Among the almost 800 graves, there are markers for veterans from the Civil War to the Vietnam War. The ranks include Privates, Commanders, and a Bronze Star recipient. Cain’s Chapel Methodist Church is listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage as of 2018. A marker in the cemetery was erected in 2020 by the church commemorating its 200th anniversary.

On this Memorial Day, may we never forget who paid the price for the freedoms we now enjoy. Thank you, American Legion Post 133, Cain’s Chapel Methodist Church Youth Group and Harold Grooms.
