Update: The Aniah’s Law hearing originally set for Memorial Day has been moved to Tuesday, according to Bill Franklin. That is now updated in the article.
An Elmore County man is charged with murder, no bond listed, after the shooting death of a woman overnight.
Zachary Lee, 34, of Tallassee, was arrested earlier today by the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office.
An Elmore County investigator told the EAN that Lee called 911 in the early morning hours, saying he and a woman got into a verbal argument on the back porch of his residence in the 80000 block of Tallassee Highway. Per the investigator, Lee told investigators the woman shot him in the leg, but he was able to take the gun away from her. He told investigators that he shot at her in self-defense as she ran into the residence.
The investigator said 911 operators told Lee to enter the home and check her status, but he refused. When investigators arrived, they found the woman deceased with multiple gunshot wounds. As this incident happened less than 24 hours ago, we are choosing not to release the victim’s name to allow for notification of next of kin. Investigators did note an apparent gunshot wound on Lee.
Lee will remain at the Elmore County Jail with no bond until he has an Aniah’s Law hearing rescheduled for Tuesday, according to Sheriff Bill Franklin. It was first set for Memorial Day.
The investigator said the deputies are familiar with this address and have responded in the past to multiple domestic violence calls.
This case remains under investigation. The suspect is considered innocent until proven guilty.
