The Marbury High School Soccer program had another successful season, with both the boys’ and the girls’ teams claiming the 2025 Class 5A Area 5 championship.
“Winning the area championship was nice and our players worked really hard to achieve that goal. We enjoyed that accomplishment in the moment but have now begun to focus on the playoffs and working each day to improve ourselves in preparation for the next contest,” said Marbury Soccer Coach Brent Sowell.
The Lady Bulldogs had an outstanding regular season, finishing 15-1 overall and 4-0 in area play, according to MaxPreps. Marbury outscored Demopolis and Booker T. Washington by a combined score of 23-2 in four area games.
“This year’s team has been successful, because the players have stayed true to the standards that have been set in the program and bought into the process of progress,” said Coach Sowell. “The work that our players put in during the offseason, our weight room sessions, and pre-season training have all contributed to their current success. Our team captains have also played a pivotal role, as their leadership has helped propel the team forward and has given our younger players solid role models to emulate. From the oldest player to the youngest player, I have seen improvement this season. Improvement and working hard in everything that we do are the goals that we chase and that has translated to success.”
That next contest will come Friday night in the 1st round of the Class 5A playoffs against the Holtville Bulldogs. The teams have already faced each other twice this season, with Marbury winning 1-0 and 3-0.
The Marbury boys team also came out on top in the area. After splitting two games against area foe Demopolis, the Bulldogs won the area championship based on a tiebreaker against common area opponent Booker T. Washington. As area champ, the Bulldogs will also get to host the 1st round of the Class 5A playoffs.
“Our post season goals are much the same as any of our goals,” said Coach Sowell. “It is not so much the end result that we chase as much as it is progressing to always better ourselves. If we continue to work towards our standard, then I feel confident that this team will continue to improve to accomplish our goals.”
The boys team will host the playoffs a day before the girls, with kickoff against Brewbaker Tech set to start at 6:30 p.m.
