National Society Daughters of the American Revolution
Members of the Captain William Bibb Chapter, NSDAR, attended the 127th State Conference of the Alabama Society Daughters of the American Revolution, held March 6-March 8 in Auburn, Al. The Alabama Society DAR is led by State Regent Malinda Williams of Birmingham, Al. Jane Burris currently serves as Captain William Bibb Chapter Regent.
This annual meeting of Alabama’s DAR featured business sessions, informative presentations, and educational workshops aimed at furthering NSDAR’s objectives of historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Winners of state awards were recognized at a luncheon on Friday, March 7, and the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women of our armed forces were honored at the Patriotism Luncheon on Saturday, March 8.
Edgewood Academy students in grades 5 – 8 were given the opportunity to participate in the 2024 DAR American History Essay contest. The 2024 essay topic was “Enjoying A New Kind of Tea Party.” The DAR American History Essay Contest is a nationwide contest open to all students in public, private, and homeschools in grades 5-8. Winners from the chapter level were then sent onto the Alabama DAR to determine state winners and runners up. Those winners were then forwarded for division and national level judging.
Captain William Bibb will present Edgewood Academy’s participants certificates at the Spring Awards Day. The school winners will also receive a medal from the chapter. Participating from Edgewood Academy under the supervision of Kristen Brazwell Poole were Newt Cain, Lexie Forte, Amelie Kujula, Silas Reece, Andrew Whitlock, and Kynadee Seavers. Captain William Bibb submitted the winning essays of Newt Cain (6th grade), Lexie Forte (7th grade), and Amelie Kujula (8th grade) to ASDAR. During the state conference in Auburn, it was announced that Newt Cain and Amelie Kujula had been awarded second place for their grade level for their submissions. Newt and Amelie will each receive a certificate from the Alabama Society DAR and a $75.00 check at Edgewood Academy’s Spring Awards Ceremony presented by Captain William Bibb chapter officers.
The Alabama Society DAR is made up of more than 4,000 women in 71 chapters across the state who can trace their lineage to patriots who fought for or provided aid to the American colonists during the Revolutionary War. The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a women’s service organization whose members can trace their lineage to an individual who contributed to securing American independence during the Revolutionary War. Today’s DAR is dynamic and diverse, with over 185,000 members in 3,000 chapters in the United States and abroad. DAR members annually provide millions of hours of volunteer service to their local communities across the country and world. DAR chapters participate in projects to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Over one million members have joined the organization since its founding in 1890.
Captain William Bibb NSDAR has members from the tri-county area and meets on the second Wednesday at 10:30 am (October – May.) They also host special events during the year.
