Deatsville resident arrested for multiple charges following Theft Complaint

From Chief P.K. Johnson

Millbrook Police Department

On April 5, 2025, Millbrook police officers responded to the 600 block of Deatsville Highway regarding a duress/panic alarm at a business. Upon arrival, officers were advised by management that he noticed an individual who had stolen liquor from the business on two previous occasions in the same week attempting to enter the business. The store manager locked the door, preventing the individual from entering the business and activated the store’s duress alarm to notify law enforcement. The offender left the business, having been denied entry.

While on scene, Millbrook police received a complaint from the ABC store, where an offender matching the same description had made entry into the business, obtained a bottle of liquor and left without remitting payment. Shortly after receiving that call, Millbrook police observed the alleged offender in the 400 block of Deatsville Highway, where officers attempted to stop the vehicle. Initially the alleged offender refused to stop, continuing to the 800 block of Deatsville Highway, where he stopped, but refused to exit the vehicle or comply with officer’s lawful commands. Officers removed the individual, later identified as Albert E. McKinnon, a 44-year-old Deatsville resident, from the vehicle. McKinnon actively resisted officers’ efforts to take him into custody. Minimal force was used to take the offender into custody.

McKinnon was placed under arrest, being charged with Attempting to Elude, Driving Under the Influence, Resisting Arrest and (2) counts of Theft of Property 4th Degree. McKinnon was transported to a local medical facility, where he was evaluated and treated for minor injuries sustained as a result of his actions during the incident, as well as over exposure to alcohol. Once medically cleared, McKinnon was transported to the Elmore County Jail, where he remains in custody pending a hearing before the Millbrook Municipal Court.

The alleged offender in this case had committed several thefts of alcoholic beverages prior to his apprehension on April 5, 2025. Our department had received complaints from the business on Deatsville Highway on April 1, 2025, and April 3, 2025. Apparently, he attempted to enter the same business on April 5th, with the intent of committing another theft, but was denied entry when the manager recognized him and locked the door.  Undeterred, the alleged offender got into his vehicle, then drove to the ABC store, allegedly committing a theft of liquor at that location.

Apparently, he didn’t plan his getaway very well, as his route home took him by the business from where he originally intended to commit theft. Officers were still present and actively searching the area in an attempt to locate him.

Based on accounts from our officers involved, this gentleman was obviously in no condition to be operating a motor vehicle or be in a public place, driving or otherwise. Hopefully, now that he has been apprehended, he can receive some assistance. Obviously, a person that commits multiple thefts of liquor in a matter of days, while under the influence of the same, has crossed a line and presents a danger to themselves, as well as others.
