From Autauga County Schools
Autauga County
In response to advice from the Autauga County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), Autauga County Schools will open the new Prattville Kindergarten School and Marbury High School as community storm shelters in anticipation of the severe weather expected in the area. This weekend’s storms are expected to be historic, bringing damaging winds and the potential for long-track tornadoes to the area. Both PKS and MHS are equipped with reinforced areas designed inside the school to withstand winds exceeding 150 MPH.
“We are committed to enhancing the safety and well-being of our community, and we’re proud to partner with local emergency agencies in this effort,” said Lyman Woodfin, Superintendent of Autauga County Schools. “We couldn’t do it without support from the Prattville Police Department and the Autauga County Sheriff’s Office. We approach everything with a student-first perspective, and this situation is no different. We want to ensure that our families and employees, along with community members, have a secure place to ride out this weather together.”
The community is invited to take advantage of these safe places on Saturday, March 15 from 2:00 – 10:00 p.m. Please note that no pets will be allowed inside the shelters. To ensure everyone’s safety, the shelter doors will lock for the duration of a tornado warning, so it’s important to arrive before the warning is active.
Storm shelter hours may be adjusted based on storm changes. Please stay tuned for updates from the Autauga County EMA, who will provide any new information regarding this weather event.
