In response to an icy weather forecast, Elmore County and Autauga County Schools will be closed tomorrow, Friday. Both districts have announced that the day will be observed as an E-learning day to ensure students can continue their education from the safety of their homes.

All sporting events, extracurricular activities, and scheduled meetings will be rescheduled.

Elmore County Superintendent Richard Dennis emphasized the importance of safety in a statement to families. “We will be sending home a breakfast and lunch meal kit with all students to help keep them fueled and cozy on the cold day ahead,” Dennis shared. “Take the necessary precautions in case your area loses power and avoid traveling when possible due to potential icy road conditions. Be safe and enjoy the little bit of winter wonderland we rarely get to experience in the deep south.”

Rebecca Thomas, Communications Coordinator for Autauga County Schools, also addressed families, offering reassurance about accessing assignments. “Your child’s school will send a message shortly through ParentSquare regarding how you can access tomorrow’s assignments. Any virtual day assignments can be submitted for credit through January 15, so please do not stress over a lack of devices or internet connectivity,” Thomas said. “In addition to the virtual assignments, students will also bring home prepackaged meals today. Some of these items may need to be refrigerated, so be sure to check your child’s backpacks this afternoon.”

With road conditions expected to be hazardous, officials urge residents to stay home and limit travel unless absolutely necessary. Families are advised to monitor local weather updates and take steps to prepare for potential power outages.

This rare bout of icy weather serves as a reminder for residents in the region to stay vigilant and embrace the chilly change in scenery.
