Beginning next year after the municipal elections, the elected Prattville mayor and council will see an increase in their salaries for the first time 17 and 20 years respectfully.
In a 5-2 vote in favor, the Prattville City Council voted in an ordinance that will increase the salaries for the sitting mayor and council, effective at the first meeting in November 2025.
Voting against were Councilmen Marcus Jackson and Robert Strichik, but the rest of the council voted in favor.
The Code of Alabama provides that salaries of elected officials shall be fixed by the Council at least six months prior to a general municipal election. The next municipal election will be August 2025, which is just over eight months from today.
The salary for the Prattville Mayor has not risen since 2007. The City Council has not seen a raise in salary since 2004.
Due to Alabama Code, salaries of elected officials shall not be increased nor diminished during the term for which they have been elected, except as described by ordinance. This means that the current mayor and council will not be impacted by this raise, unless they run and retain their seats in the next election.
The resolution allows the council to include an increase in salary for the next Mayor and Councilors during the 2025-2029 Quadrennium.
With the passage of this ordinance, the next Mayor’s annual salary will be $110,000 for the first two years of the 2025-2029 Quadrennium to be compensated in equal monthly payments beginning in November 2025.
However, it also sets the mayor’s annual salary to increase again to $120,000 for the last two years of the Quadrennium effective October 2027. The mayor also receives a car allowance of $1,000 a month during the entire 2025-2029 Quadrennium with payments monthly effective November 2025.
The ordinance passed also calls for a raise in pay for council members in the next Quadrennium of $30,000 per year except for the President of the Council who will be paid $35,000 per year during between 2025-2029.
The Mayor and Council are eligible to continue participating in the City group health, dental, vision, life and flexible spending benefits. This ordinance will become effective on the first meeting in November 2025 and will continue in force and effect until repealed by action of the Council.
